In 1940, over 338,000 retreating allied troops were rescued by a hastily assembled fleet of over 800 vessels at the French port of Dunkirk.
Vast amounts of weapons and armour had to be abandoned.
Rapid production of equipment to repel an inevitable German invasion began.

The Mk3 Standard Beaverette armoured vehicle was in production from 1940 – 1942, and was used for home defense and training by the Home Guard, RAF and the British Army.
